Why wash my carpets?
Although regular vacuuming of your carpets removes everyday dirt, it does not completely remove the deep-down dirt and grease that makes carpets look flat and lifeless. Washing your carpets will.

Summary: THE WORST GAGET I HAVE EVER BOUGHT
Comment: CANT BELIEVE HOW USELESS THIS IS.YOU WONT FIND ANYTHING ITS GOOD AT CLEANING. THEY CANT GIVE THEM AWAY ON EBAY. IN THE END YOU WONT EVEN BOTHER TO GET IT OUT. BELIEVE ME IVE TRIED EVERYTHING. DON'T SAY I DIDN'T WARN YOU

Summary: Excellent machine
Comment: I tried this first on the stone tiles in my father's bathroom - very grubby with ground-in dirt, despite constant mopping. This cleaner has lifted the dirt completely and brought these up better than they appeared on moving in - spotless! I did have to wipe round afterwards to remove the grime, but this is a cheaper machine with no vacuuming ability, so I expected that, but it certainly shifted the dirt. I then tried it in the kitchen, where the vinyl flooring was greasy under the cooker and again it made it easy to remove. The floor looks almost like new. The extension tubes don't feel as solid as a vacuum cleaner, but not much pressure is needed as the steam does the work for you. Overall I'm delighted.

Summary: Sanitizes but that's it
Comment: I was using a Pet Vax regular water based carpet cleaner for many years, it was fiddly but worked ok, not great but ok. Thought I'd go down the steam route as one of my cats has a dust mite allergy.
After opening and unpacking everything like others here, found the manual didn't say very much about which bits cleaned what. Eventually tried doing the carpets but the solid brush carpet attachment makes it near impossible, it's like vacuuming a carpet when you leave the hard floor brush on. Even with the cotton condom on it doesn't improve much, and after a while that slips out of the clips which are meant to hold it securely in place, good for hard floors maybe, but not carpets.
Using the jet attachment on grouting didn't really do too much either, even on full power.
I don't recommend this as a cleaner if you want carpets to look like new etc, fine it kills mites and germs, just no good for stains. My regular water vax worked much better and if you use water freshly boiled from the kettle, will probably kill the mites too.

Summary: Be smart and don't buy it!
Comment: I didn't buy this appliance from Amazon, but from the manufacturer. It has only been used 4 times since new - approx 2 years ago - and now it doesn't work at all, after changing fuses and checking all eventualities etc... it coughed and spluttered and then died forever. So RIP steam machine - Longevity is not happening here!

Comment: Luckily Vax have an excellent approach to customer service, and are going to refund me (you have to deal with Vax direct) as I have now had three of these machines and all have broken down.
